Reimagining the Doolan-Larson Building for a New Generation

The Corner of Haight & Ashbury

Meet the Teams:
April 29th, 5:30pm at the Park Branch Library

Welcome!

At the corner of Haight and Ashbury stands the historic Doolan‑Larson House and Storefronts, a landmark of the counterculture and a symbol of San Francisco’s ongoing role as a nexus of cultural and political change.

In 2017, Norm Larson gifted this property to San Francisco Heritage to protect its legacy and unlock its public potential. That vision is now advancing into its next chapter, as the project moves from open inquiry into active development and public dialogue.

The Request for Concept Proposals (RFCP) phase has concluded, and San Francisco Heritage has invited five teams to respond to a Request for Proposals (RFP), which was released on February 6, 2026. The goals of the project remain unchanged:

  1. Honor Cultural and Architectural Heritage
  2. Contribute to Local Economic Growth
  3. Engage the Local Community

Meet the teams on April 29, 5:30 pm at the Park Branch Library, 1833 Page Street.

  • Crossroads Haight Ashbury
  • KEXP
  • Skidmore, Owings & Merrill
  • LOVEHOUSE – Tannerhecht Architecture
  • ECCO – Tim Barber Architects

These teams will submit their final proposals on June 12, 2025. San Francisco Heritage intends to select a partner in summer 2026.

This website remains your gateway to the process. We welcome your continued participation as we work together to create a living center that honors the past and inspires what’s possible ahead.

A National Historic Treasure

The Doolan-Larson House is a National Historic Treasure because of its location at Haight & Ashbury and because of its architectural integrity. This opportunity is a chance to explore San Francisco’s role in shaping social, cultural, and political trends and disruptions, and its continued impact on the national consciousness.

Haight & Ashbury remains the epicenter of the counterculture movement, inspiring people to seek new ways of thinking and living. People from across the country came to San Francisco to search for acceptance, meaning, and opportunity—what happens next at the Doolan-Larson buildings is your opportunity to be part of this story.
